Historic Riverfront 1913 Home on 10 Acres

Posted: September 10, 2014

Welcome home to 11 Grimball River Road in one of Savannah’s most desirable deep water locations. Steeped in many years of rich history and held proudly by the same family for over one hundred years, this parcel within a private enclave is a special part of a secluded neighborhood known as Grimball Point.

The property’s original designer, Judge Arthur Solomon, was a founding force of the American Camellia Society and as president, helped form the National Camellia Trail of which Savannah is a part. At that time, the property was known as Wellesly Manor (Judge Solomon’s parents were English) and it was a showplace for Camellias, Azaleas and other flowers and opened yearly to the public. The property resonates with that floral history today and it is not hard to visualize the gardens restored to their former glory.

The house was completed in 1913 and constructed with native Cypress throughout. It stands today as a reminder of the past and is situated to take-in the breezes and enjoy views of Grimball Creek, which leads to the Skidaway River, Wassaw Sound, and the Atlantic Ocean. There are approximately 275 feet of riverfront on high ground with ten acres from a ten foot bluff, and there are always water, shrimp, crabs and fish in the creek. This property has so many wonderful memories. Any new family will enjoy all the exciting life experiences of living on the river. The property is truly a gift. With four bedrooms and two baths upstairs, there is also a huge covered screened porch, as well as an artist studio, which was probably a former sleeping porch and could serve as a fifth bedroom or studio, office, study, or media room. Downstairs, there is another full bath and a half.

This property is located in Isle of Hope, and has view of Dutch Island, Modena Island, The Skidaway Oceanographic Institute, Skidaway State Park, and the actual Grimball Point. It is a most desirable island location within a short drive to Sandfly with restaurants, a shopping center, grocer, nursery, dry cleaner, baker, and other amenities. The nearby Truman Parkway going south provides access to Savannah’s southside and I-95 beyond, and northward it leads directly into the downtown area for all the offerings Savannah has to give.

And Savannah has a lot to give. With a thriving port, several colleges of higher education, including SCAD (The Savannah College of Art and Design), a booming tourist industry, the burgeoning rebirth of Broughton Street as a retail mecca, Gulfstream Aerospace Corp., The JCB heavy equipment manufacturer, and several other international industrial leaders, Georgia is known as a State to do business. The film industry constantly finds Savannah a great place to work, and conversely Savannah continues to be an ideal place to retire whether or not you want the Historic setting of downtown, or one of the many island settings like Isle of Hope. Come make the soul of Savannah the heart of your life!

Charming Historic Condominium Row House

Posted: July 7, 2014

Welcome home to 540-A East Gaston Street. This Historic Condominium row house is a perfect space for a SCAD PAD (Savannah College of Art and Design). Your son or daughter will enjoy the convenient location near SCAD buildings and all the amenities of downtown Savannah. Mother Matilda Beasley Park is steps away, and Forsyth Park is a few blocks to the west. Ingenious loft beds are a creative way to have studio space below the live/work platform bed above. New kitchen and bath, redone heart of pine flooring, and a great garden space, plus one off-street parking spot out back. Plenty of on-street parking as well.

Take a sentimental journey back in time in this fully restored nineteenth century home with plenty of natural light, a full laundry area off the kitchen, central heat and air, all new wiring, and all the charm of the downtown lifestyle. This property would also make a perfect second home or a great spot for a professional person, and military guys and gals are enjoying living in nearby homes so you would fit right in as well!

The kitchen is a pleasure to work in with great Corian counter top space and all newer cabinets and appliances. Many a fine meal has been cooked here.

This historic neighborhood is known as The Beach Institute for its nearby neighborhood historic school which is now a museum.

This is a close-knit neighborhood with an active association if you want to get involved. Or just sit back and enjoy all the progress that has been made in this area over the past several years. Savannah is changing, and to be in this location, what I call the Golden Rectangle (Bay Street to the north, East Broad to the east, MLK Blvd to the west [formally West Broad Street] and an ever changing line to the south), is getting harder to do. New construction is filling in all the blanks — come and claim your piece!

Gorgeous, Free Standing, 1796 Landmark Property

Posted: May 14, 2014

507 E. Saint Julian

A feast for the eyes and soul — this house is Savannah! Elegant and old and desired by all! Continue the long-standing and loving stewardship of this free standing circa 1796 Home. Rare Opportunity!

Own a piece of history — only three previous owners have lived here since the restoration and relocation of this famous Landmark Property, which is beautifully situated on the best residential block of Historic Saint Julian Street at number 507 East.

Wonderful light and grace wait to greet you in this one-of-a-kind eighteenth century home which is freestanding and encompasses four stories plus a roof walk with views of the Savannah skyline and ships passing by on the nearby Savannah River.

On the garden level, the most comfortable and enchanting rooms were envisioned and accomplished. Exposed hand-hewn beams accent the ceiling, handmade antebellum bricks from the White-Redding Plantation give a warm inviting feeling to the walls, floor, and massive fireplace, and a glazed wall with French doors looks into the famous sunken garden created by historic home master craftsman, Jim Williams. A powder room and a wet bar give additional comfort on this level.

With a five bedroom floor plan, three full baths and two powder rooms, 507 East Saint Julian Street can accommodate a number of different lifestyle configurations. On-street parking is abundant and with off street parking just outside the kitchen door, your teenager, in-law, or guest will enjoy the former porte-cochere turned private suite with its own entrance below the kitchen and sunroom. This area would also make a great private office.

Above is a superb addition, which expands the kitchen into the modern open floor plan so desirable for today’s style of living. Light and airy, the space greets you with an expanse of east facing windows and an outdoor porch overlooking the garden below. The kitchen has a modern open feel allowing for today’s casual entertaining style while the more formal rooms in front are perfect for those times when tradition counts. With a front parlor, formal dining room, another wet bar, butler’s pantry, and a cozy breakfast room, your choices for parlor level sitting and relaxing or entertaining are numerous.

Above the parlor floor is one whole level devoted to a master suite with an adjoining room that works well with its current arrangement for exercise equipment, media, and office space but could easily be used as a fifth bedroom, nursery, or occasional guest area.

On the top floor are the most splendid rooms for children or guests with light from dormers built into the gambrel roof and a full bath.

507 East Saint Julian, The Hampton Lillibridge House, is only a few steps to numerous fine restaurants, the venues of the Savannah Film Festival, and the Savannah Music Festival as well as all the other amenities of downtown Savannah. This home is perfect for entertaining and enjoying the walking lifestyle that is only achieved by living in Savannah’s National Historic Landmark District.

Bede Van Dyke

Ron, I’m so glad my old friend and your neighbor recommended you to represent me in my recent search for property in Savannah. You made it easy, finding a range of properties that met my criteria and enabling me to focus on one quickly and decisively.

Our real estate experience with Ron was amazing. Our 1876 row house in the Historic District gave new meaning to the term fixer-upper! The home was SCAD student (my own and others!) housing for 10+ years. The property still had great “bones” and was definitely worth restoring. Ron coached us through the restoration to the end.

The result was a property that listed for 50% more than we had thought, and one that had a great offer the first week. Ron visited the property often, made extremely helpful design suggestions, recommended many of our sub-contractors, advertised the home perfectly, and sold it within a month for a fantastic price.  His personal involvement was remarkable, and he gave us great encouragement throughout.

Ron is a gem!

Peter K.

Ron Melander is the best residential real estate agent in the Landmark Historic District of Savannah, Georgia. His passion for these properties is reflected in his expertise. Moreover, his experience and years living downtown afford him great perspective. And, he knows everyone.

His care for these living, breathing, beautiful properties is earnest. He gives the respect that these properties require. He is not the typical agent who will put up a sign and wait for the phone to ring. He will not leave you at the mercy of the market.

Ron is a nice person and easy to deal with. He understood my demands as a seller and executed efficiently with a sale in three months (at closing, the market had a nine months supply of inventory). He is a consummate professional in getting a transaction to closing. I enjoyed working with him.
